WHAT’S NEW from the Cutting Edge w/ Kelly Richey – SPRING 2022

This month, we kick off WHAT’S NEW from the Cutting Edge w/ Kelly Richey – SPRING 2022 by learning how to set practical goals for maximum growth and developing a 20-minute daily practice routine that sets you up for success.

FOCUS MATERIAL FOR SPRING:
20 MINUTE PRACTICE ROUTINES & GOALS SETTING

1) FINGER EXERCISES FOR GUITAR:

– METRONOME: When practicing finger exercises, always use a metronome and set it to 72 BPM. This tempo allows beginners to play these exercises with quarter notes using all-down picks. Intermediate and advanced students can practice these exercises with eighth and sixteenth notes, using alternative picking for speed.

Note: An example of these finger exercises can be found in the section titled “Blues Guitar for Beginner Students, “Lessons #1, #2, and #3.

– Mute strings with your left hand, and for a few minutes, connect with the groove— feel the pulse in your body: Strum quarter notes, eighth notes, and when you’re ready, sixteenth notes. Tap your foot, feel the groove, and transition into your finger exercises.

NOTE: An example of this rhythm exercise can be found in the “Quick Start Guide” section in the folder titled “BONUS MATERIALS,” videos #4, #5, and #6.

– Practice finger exercises 1, 2, or 3, depending on your playing level; practice one finger exercise each day and cycle through them.

NOTE: The goal is to be able to play all three finger exercises up and down the neck each day. Depending on your level, be patient; it will come!

2) GUITAR BACKING TRACKS:

– Each day, pick a packing track and listen, feel the groove, play the chord progression for at least 2 or 3 verses, then practice minor pentatonic scales until they are in your DNA! As you feel comfortable, allow these notes to come alive.

NOTE: There is a section in the channel titled “guitar backing tracks.” Explore these backing tracks and find ones that inspire you to want to play!

3) SET GOALS:

– Step One: Learn finger exercise #1, perfect it, and let it give birth to finger exercises #2 and#3. The ultimate goal is to be able to play each of the three-finger exercises up and down the neck with precision and then jam with freedom to a favorite backing track each day.
